I LOVE documentaries and I think the author of the above article makes a valid point. The quote below makes me think of Blackfish (directed by a woman, Gabriela Cowperthwaite); a rather controversial movie, but one that created conversation and awareness.
“When it comes to awards and accolades, when we are put in the silly position of valuing one documentary over another, the films themselves should be recognized on their own merits, more than the people behind them. Of course, it’s not really that simple, because some films should also be recognized for the impact they can have on society, which would suggest we do need to look beyond the frame.” -Tom Roston
The only female directed film up for Best Documentary Feature this year is The Square by Jehane Noujaim. It is currently available on Netflix!
What did you think of the film? Which documentary do think deserves to win?
